Course Description

Whether a teacher is a new AP® Biology teacher or someone who has taught the course for years, there will be something for everyone at this Advanced Placement Summer Institute. The AP Biology Curriculum Framework has been the “new” standard for several years and has already undergone one revision. Participants will learn how to navigate the AP Central website, including the course audit portal.

We will review the Framework and use the Science Practices. We will discuss the AP Biology labs in the Lab Manual and learn how to prepare and conduct at least two of the labs for each of the four Big Ideas.

In addition, participants will learn how to use existing resources most effectively to implement the curriculum framework and labs into their course on a variety of budgets. Alternative and supplemental lab activities will be shared. Various CER (Claims, Evidence, Reasoning) and Argument-Driven Inquiry activities and resources will be featured each day.

Throughout the week, participants will have the opportunity to share ideas and work together on preparing for the course audit. Discussions of the 2017 exam results and best teaching practices to help students succeed will be included each day, including participation in mini “mock readings” of sample Free Response Questions. We will also review pacing guides, sample syllabi, and textbooks.

Participants are encouraged to bring a laptop, an inquiry-based laboratory or classroom activity/resource to share (electronic or hard copy — it does not have to be AP-level), a copy of an AP Instructional Planning Report (APIPR) from a previous school year (if you have one), and a willingness to exchange effective teaching practices and activities with your peers.

Cheryl Hollinger

Cheryl Ann Hollinger has been a College Board consultant since 1997, leading regional, national, and international AP workshops. She has led AP Biology Summer Institutes for over a decade. Cheryl served as an AP consultant trainer and she also mentors new consultants. She is an experienced AP Exam Reader, PRAXIS Exam item writer, member of the Subject Matter Expert team for AP Biology Insight and an AP Insight consultant. In addition, Cheryl is an HHMI Ambassador, NABT/BSCS/HHMI Region IX AP Biology Teacher Academy leader, a NMSI consultant, and the assistant to the Director of the Teacher Institute for Evolutionary Science (TIES).

Cheryl taught biology at both the high school and college level, teaching Human Anatomy & Physiology and AP Biology for over 20 years. She belongs to various professional organizations including NSTA, OSTA, and NABT. Cheryl is also a reviewer for The American Biology Teacher and The Science Teacher and leads workshops at state, regional, and national science conferences.

Cheryl has been recognized for teaching excellence during her career. These include the NABT Outstanding Biology Teacher Award (Pennsylvania), Presidential Award for Excellence In Science Teaching (state finalist), Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers, and the Siemens Award for Excellence in Advanced Placement Science Teaching. Most recently she was honored to be the first recipient of the Kim Foglia AP® Biology Service Award. Cheryl loves teaching and mentoring teachers. Traveling, reading, hiking, and camping are some of her favorite things to do in her spare time.
